Getting the Most From Your GPS

 

Who:   Karen Stefanyk, a biologist who uses a GPS daily in her work on the water, will be showing you how to get the most from your GPS…

 

Skill Level:  Individuals who would like to learn basic functions of a handheld GPS for kayak use. Class size is limited to 8 people.

 

When & Where:   Saturday, January 26th, 9:30 – 12:30 pm.           

Salvation Army Citadel, 4030 Douglas Street (McKenzie exit off of Blanchard Road) Junior Room

 

The Plan:   Participants must bring their own GPS (Model must be submitted when registering).

 

Course topics:

  • Theory: What is GPS, and how does it work? The basics.
  • Terminology: waypoints, tracks, routes, position format, datum
  • Entering Settings: measurement units, position format, datum, time, resetting trip data
  • Techniques: mark and enter waypoints, find a waypoint, follow a track, access trip data
  • Discussion: limitations of GPS and application to kayaking
  • OPTIONAL: Last hour of the course we can take the units outside to play with them. Please bring appropriate clothing.
